This book is very cleverly constructed. There is nothing superfluous. Every chapter moves the story forward or provides explanation. The narrators are just superb. Make sure you have some time available to get through this one as it is difficult to stop listening.. Uplifting and yes possibly life changing.

A talented writer from a privileged family, very well educated, beautiful, skinny, her idea of failure is being in a very well paid job with a prestigious newspaper for eight years before she goes freelance and earns mega bucks. Oh yes one night in her journalistic career might have become a bit difficult because she misread the signs and might have been propositioned by the lonely old man in the b&b. Give me a break. This writer does not know how to fail at anything except convincing me that she does know failure. I wanted this book to help me,support my feelings a bit, maybe leave me feeling that I haven't done too bad despite the disasters. Instead,I'm left feeling deeply shortchanged, terrified i might come across this person in real life ( though no chance of that)and I certainly don't want to read anything more by the over privileged Tosser.

Anne Reid was a great choice for reading this book. She sounded just like the main character, sensitive, vulnerable, scared but also strong, loving and full of humour and pathos. The way the story halts to give us a glimpse of the country is beautifully constructed and works very sucessfully...just enough detail before getting back to the journey. I feel as though I know the area quite well now.Strong social commentary with genuine reason.Perfection in my view. Thank you again Anne.

The first audio book i have had which has the correct chapter numbers! Why have I been settling for less for so long? I loved the book. The author excels in drawing the characters fully and the narrator is perfect . Entertaining, thought provoking , and a good dash of the "lucky country".

Her throat seemed lined with fur"...impossible to listen to the stories for fear the narrator will lengthen the end of the word at the end of the phrase. I'm trying to overcome this fear because the stories are an interesting collection but it's not one of the best buys I've ever made

This is incredible. I was not expecting this. This is something to savour. This is the most exquisite , most professional narrator i have encountered in all my years of Audible membership. I am constantly awestruck by the ingenuity, skill and conscientious rendering of Dicken's characters voices. Every phrase, every word has been carefully considered and executed to the listener"s ultimate satisfaction. It is almost a different Audible experience. I am now going to buy everything narrated by Me Margolyes and luxuriate in the knowledge i have found the best.
