When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history. Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret.

Aged 13, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld.

Prior to purchase I had heard and read a lot about this book and decided to read/listen to after reading the reviews.. the goldfinch is a true modern classic. I absolutely loved it and would put it up there with many of my favourites.. it has a Dickensian quality .. the story is touchingly human .. from which we can all learn lessons..

Like some of the other reviews I think the book is brought to life via the narrator.. it is an example of a truly exceptional audio book ..the book is long and I chose to buy the audio version from a time perspective.. I could not put it down .. loved every minute.. it will stay with me for a long time .. I could not recommend more highly.,
