Philip Pullman returns to the world of His Dark Materials with this magnificent first volume of The Book of Dust series. Eleven-year-old Malcolm Polstead and his dæmon, Asta, live with his parents at the Trout Inn near Oxford. Across the River Thames (which Malcolm navigates often using his beloved canoe, a boat by the name of La Belle Sauvage) is the Godstow Priory where the nuns live. Malcolm learns they have a guest with them - a baby by the name of Lyra Belacqua....

In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about 60 years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all. On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds....

Not what I expected, turned out to be better! I found it very funny and at parts laugh out loud hilarious. Not quite sure if a non-gamer would find it as good, but on the other hand, you should give all things a try once! Recommended. And, what is the meaning of life, Jim?!

This is quite beautifully written. An insight into the time and the life these people lead. An fair reflection on how events and a persons life may have played out.
It's well read. The slow pace allowing one to take everything and dwell on these peoples equally laborious lives.
