Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

One of the best books I have listened to. Beautifully written with unbelievable use of language. Comparable to Moby Dick or some other classic.
Tragic, frightening, but very relevant story

What other book might you compare The Last Ship to, and why?

The Road. This is much longer but worth every minute. Not for those who are impatient for action.

What about Christopher Lane’s performance did you like?

Voices really suited the characters. The measured manner of speech of the Captain was beautiful to listen to - it really expressed his character

Any additional comments?

A classic dystopian novel.

Would you listen to The Girl with All the Gifts again? Why?

Yes, definitely. Will return to it in about a year for a different experience, even just to understand and admire the way the author has structured the revelations throughout the plot.

What did you like best about this story?

The way there is mystery in the small details. Also the notions of love, parenting and teaching in the book. Was reminded of Margaret Attwood's writing style.

What about Finty Williams’s performance did you like?

Sensitively read.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not spoiling the book for anyone. Read it yourself.

Any additional comments?

A really worthwhile book. It will be had for the author to follow up on this without spoiling it. Hope Mike Carey leaves it as a stand-alone and isn't tempted to do a sequel.

Repetitive with unnecessary detail.

What did you like best about The Watcher? What did you like least?

Interesting story. Obvious attempt to add a deeper psychological level to each character's motivation, but this comes across as padding without creating any real depth.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The writing style is the real problem, not the story itself. The book is overwritten, with each action analyzed to the point where the magic is lost. The reader is "nannied" along to the point where each character's thought process becomes an annoyance.

What three words best describe Lucy Scott’s performance?

"Aga saga" performance

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

Struggled to get through this. It seemed as though the writer was attempting to create depth without just hinting at it (and allowing the reader some creative interpretation). Boring.

Loved the characters - believable and diverse. A story that was gripping, inspiring and tragic. Would read anything else by this author.
