After a slow start the story becomes one of those that would be called unputdownable if in print. I got so caught up in it that it was almost 4am when I finally turned it off. A little laboured at times but the essence of the story carries it.

I love this series. I am happily and contentedly wiring my way again trying the audio version of a series I have loved for years. This was the first one I read and I am finding listening to the audio books just as enjoyable and easy to return to.

In this prequel to The Sword of Shannara, in which many details of the Four Lands' history are revealed, Druids, horrified by the misuse of magic, have eschewed it in favor of science. But Bremen the Druid studies magic, and becomes an outcast on its account. Bremen discovers that an invincible army of trolls are fast conquering all that lay to their south. Before them come the Nazgul-like Skull Bearers, disfigured and transformed Druids who have fallen prey to the dark arts.

I received a free code for this from the author. I tried this book because it sounded rather interesting and I'm glad I did. This is an enthralling tale of siblings at war with each other. These are divinities and their struggles are reminiscent of classical mythology as they contain gods, goddesses, hidden locations where the gods live, magic and lots of sea monsters. An enjoyable adventure very nicely put together. The reasons that this did not get 5 stars were a sometimes stilted narration and at times jarring music which was painful to the ears for me. Others may well have no problem with it. I would have given it a 4.5 but the ratings system doesn't do half marks. An excellent, well put together book that draws you into the story and holds tightly on to you until the end.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one. A thief, a candlemaker, an ex-mercenary, and a pig farmer walk into a trap…and what happens to them is no joke. When Riyria is hired to retrieve a jester’s treasure, Royce and Hadrian must match wits with a dwarf who proves to be anything but a fool. Difficult choices will need to be made, and in the end those who laugh last do so because they are the only ones to survive.

This is the epic story of Hatshepsut, the ancient Egyptian princess and queen who was crowned king, and for more than 20 years ruled on the Horus-throne of the living as the "Female Falcon". The name Hatshepsut chose for herself as pharaoh can be read as Maat is the Ka of Re, which means "the true and beautiful manifestation of the sun's divine life-force". A more poetic but still accurate translation is "truth is the soul of the sun".

Bringing together the culture, customs and religion of Ancient Egypt, this book brings to life Hatshepsut, the Female Pharoah about whom not that much is known. It shows an extraordinary, vibrant, intelligent woman whose life holds Ancient Egypt on course at a time it would have been very vulnerable. Although a novel, the love of the author for the subject shines through. An enjoyable story of a woman, remarkable for her time who asks to be remembered.

One of the genre's favorite pair return in a classic fantasy short for both Riyria veterans and first-time readers. Several years have past since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire organization better known as Riyria. Things have gone well enough for the team as they do "jobs" for various nobles throughout Elan. Usually, that means stealing something, but when a young heiress asks them to steal her…well, that's a first for the pair. All is not as it seems, but Royce is determined to get the bottom of what's actually going on. After all, he has his professional integrity at stake.

I have just finished "The Disappearance of Winter's Daughter". I enjoyed the story, but it's the relationship between the main characters that really makes this book. With Interesting minor characters and a dark humour at times, the book leaves you wishing to hear more. It is the first I have heard by this author and I now intend to get other books in the series. Loved it.
