Meet Samuel: stalled writer, bored teacher at a local college, obsessive player of online video games. He hasn't seen his mother, Faye, in decades, not since she abandoned her family when he was a boy. Now she has suddenly reappeared, having committed an absurd politically motivated crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the Internet, and inflames a divided America. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high school sweetheart.

Really enjoyed it overall. A great novel. In places I found there was a lot of added description and detail, which didn't add to the story and was slightly boring. Also the narrator's voices for the young girl student and Ponage were incredibly grating - a bit overdone. That said, the plot was engaging and exciting, and the characterisation excellent. I would recommend! Just get through the overly detailed / annoying voice bits.

The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed . If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs....

This novel is fantastic and a true classic of our time, but sadly the voice chosen was not the right one. So strange to hear this well-spoken, clipped English voice for this character and setting. There was also no differing in tone or accent for other the characters' dialogue. Despite all that, I did enjoy the story and listened to the end, so obviously didn't find it complete unbearable! Joanna David should just perhaps stick to more suitable books.
