Good story but spoiled by narrator

The story was ok, a bit predictable in places but otherwise ok.

The story is of an American woman who is in London to do a tv show as a result of the intended star suffering an allergic reaction to an ingredient in something she ate. The accents the narrator used were sadly very bad. The upper class British accents were reminiscent of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins and truly cringe-worthy and her attempt at a Scottish accent was worse. I wouldn't get another story narrated by the same person but would give another story by the author a go.

I have to agree with Hazel Dunfermline who said that the wrong narrator read this story; she was an excellent narrator but sounded too old and potentially too 'posh' for the main character which detracted from the enjoyment of listening to it.

Carole Matthews always writes an entertaining story and this was no exception.

I always give my listens a star rating but rarely am I so pleased with a book that I write a review of it.

This was a departure from the sort of story I normally listen to and I 'stumbled' across it as a suggestion for me. The story is of the life and loves of a group of women (and ultimately men) brought together as a result of the Second World War; the disparate group soon forge friendships that are meaningful and would last beyond the war. There was humour, love, sadness, grief, betrayal...the list could go on, all of it written so well that you really felt like you were with them. The narrator was excellent and I was sorry to get to the end of the book. I will be listening to The Bomb Girls next and hope that it will be as good as this was and that there are more offerings from this author very soon!

If in doubt about this book...do it...its the best story I have heard all year.

I was looking forward to getting this book and couldn't initially decide whether to get it in print or in audio format. I am really pleased I got it as an audio book as I enjoyed listening to Susan herself read, what must have been quite a difficult book to write, at least on an emotional level. I work for a Mental Health NHS Trust and felt a real admiration for her as she talked about the difficult times in her history and made me appreciate more what those who suffer with mental health issues go through.

Thought provoking, at times sad then amusing, always honest and one of the best audible books I have heard.

A well deserved #susanisawesome !

This isn't the first Jenny Colgan story that I have listened to and she is one of the authors whose stories I automatically purchase to listen to. The story didn't disappoint but the Scottish accents that the reader used were really bad and reduced my enjoyment of the story.

Having read the other Chocolate Lover's title I was keen to listen to their next set of adventures. The story in itself was what I was hoping for but there were far too many chapters cut short as the recording jumped onto the start of the next chapter. I deleted the download and then downloaded it again, but the problem persisted and this was really irritating.

Overall, for fans of the previous story this is an enjoyable next episode, however, some of its threads were definitely affected by the poor quality of the download and so the 1 star given for performance is not reflective of the reader, who is enjoyable to listen to.

I've had a couple of other books by Veronica Henry and have been pleased with them. This book however was disappointing.

The story wasn't the best but the narration was very poor and I was almost at the point of stopping listening many times. I would urge everyone to listen to the sample first (which I hadn't done as I had bought the story based on previous experience of this author) before purchasing.
