Laughing out loud until it hurt

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

What an amazing book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am so pleased I got the audible version. I do not tend to listen to this type of book but had a credit available and a long journey and so thought I would give it a go. I am so pleased I did. It was touching, hilarious and honest. I enjoy his comedy anyway but I have a renewed appreciation for his talent. I highly recommend this book.

A very good listen. Moving and honest. It felt real and a lot was said in matters that were hinted at but not explicitly explored.

Moving and powerful. Shocking and horrific. A whole generation living through this unimaginable horror. Excellent book- a powerful story that tells the history without soft soaping. I could not stop listening and finished it within two days. Highly recommended.

Thought provoking, interesting & wonderfully read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Harrowing, moving, beautifully written. The narrator makes the experience even more enjoyable. It is hard to believe that all those voices came from one man! i found the voices matched the characters personality. The strength of individuals following personal and national trauma shines through. It was interesting to think about the personal motives of those going to help in countries recovering from war.

Great book, really nicely read. It was so interesting having a thriller set within a culture I am not familiar with. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have recommended it to friends.

Moving book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book but wish I had read it rather than listened to it as the narrator was not for me. Moving and left me thinking about it for days after I had finished it.

Enjoyable and loved the narrator!

The narration of this book was first class. I would listen to any book that he narrates. The book itself was very good. The psychiatrist, and her practice, was not true to life in any shape or form but entertaining nonetheless. The story was intriguing and full of twists and turns that drew me back to listen to a bit more, and made it difficult to leave the car, where I was listening, once I had arrived. i would recommend this book.

Very enjoyable book. I really was not sure it I would enjoy it but fancied a different style and theme from my usual books. I was pleasantly surprised. I listen to books on long work related car journeys and I looked forward to spending time in the car so I could listen to it!

Important subject but ...

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 23-05-11

Such an important subject but the style was not my cup of tea. This is a very personal reason not to like it and I can see why other reviewers raved about this book. If you like poetry, read in the stereotypical way, with pauses in unusual places and metaphors abounding then this may be for you. At times it felt like I was listening to a poem that was going on for hours and hours! I found the book hard to get into and stay connected with because of the reading style. The story depicts the harrowing nature of slavery and what humans, whatever their race or background, are capable of.
I give it three stars because I think it probably is a very well written book, covering a very difficult subject, but one that I could not appreciate because of the style of writing or reading.
