This third instalment has some more noticable issues than the previous two Expanse books, but is still good overall.

The plot languishes at the beginning not really bring the inciting incident into focus in a clear way until the story is well under way.

The cast is broader than before with all of the new characters taking a long time to come into their own and feel interesting to follow. By the end I still didn't care too much for them. Something that is compounded by the less time spent with the familiar cast from the previous books.

As the story itself carries on there are times when the action feels contrived to make sure events get to a certain point that on more than one occasion I was able to guess ahead of the story getting there.

And one last minor gripe. Compared to the previous two books, there's more easily definable moustache twirling villain whose actions while honestly plausible given the actions of our own political leaders, is frustrating.

All that said, I was eventually slowly gripped into the orbit of this book's story and much like the previous two stories before it, I burned through the audiobook in a matter of days.

Three stars is a recommendation.

Great expansion.

Does what the first book does while growing the lore and raising the stakes.

Some of the dialogue is clunky and reflects the speed the books were produced.

The story grips the whole ways through, and the narration does a good job of distinguishing every individual character.

Audible needs to add better chapter titles. Otherwise, it's a near flawless.

Toss a coin to Sapkowski.

The narrative device that serves to frame the short stories herein makes the book breeze by and the general time if the performance make The Last Wish highly entertaining.

Thrilling and unsettling in equal measure.

I made the decision to give Leviathan Wakes a go after failing to get into the Expanse tv show.

The story rarely falters and appropriately expands its world and the stakes therein as the story progresses towards its conclusion.

It comfortably sticks the landing of its story and leaves enough open avenues to make me immediately want to get stuck into the next book in the series.

A very well performed rendition of the classic novel. A must read for any fan of science fiction and expanded universe fantasy.
