The penultimate volume of the mighty Riftwar Cycle. War rages in Midkemia but behind the chaos there is disquieting evidence of dark forces at work. Jim Dasher’s usually infallible intelligence network has been cleverly dismantled; nowhere is safe. He feels that the world is coming apart at the seams and is helpless to protect his nation. Quiet palace coups are underway in Roldem and Rillanon; and King Gregory of the Isles has yet to produce an heir.

The narrator has changed, Meagher sounds like a 13 year old, he pronounces names of things, people and places differently and it sounds awful. When you have listened to almost an entire series of books with the same narrator a change is disastrous for me.

I really enjoyed this, Auri is a favourite character. Highly disappointed that Rupert Degas didn't narrate though. He has Auris' character perfect and I really wanted to hear him voicing her thinking mind.
It bits me when authors think they can narrate but clearly can't.
Looking forward to more.

Dante and Blays have forced Gladdic from the Collen Basin. But the victory might be only the first battle in a much larger war. With the land on the brink of starvation and politically fractured, Dante and Blays scramble to secure Collen's food, borders, and allies. Before their work is done, rumor arrives from Mallon. The enemy is mustering for another attack. Even if Collen can weather the coming storm, there's no guarantee their independence will last out the year.

Really enjoyed this book, looking forward to the second one.
The only issue I have is Aidans (not sure of spelling as it's an audiobook) accent.
It sounds like something straight out of Darby O'Gill and the Little People. Don't know if the narrator was actually going for an Irish accent but it is hideous and I cringed everytime he spoke.
Don't let that put anyone off though!
