It is 1866 and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

Such a disappointment as a book. If you like a Victorian style written more slowly and deliberately than Dickens then you may like it, but I could not tolerate the slow pace and the, albeit, quite realistic, attempt to write as though the author was 200 years old.

Striker has a gift. He sees things other cops don’t. Sometimes, it’s a blessing. On other occasions, a curse. When a package containing graphic pictures of a murder taking place is delivered to the mother of the victim, the unconventional and uncompromising detective is called upon to use his special talents to solve the case. With just a small team of specialist officers, including the beautiful psychological profiler DC Felicity Abbott, Striker quickly learns he is dealing with not one but two serial killers who are about to kill one victim each week.

I think the story might have been interesting but after several attempts I had to give up. I have never heard such terrible narration in any audible book before. It was the most odd, and off putting way of reading I have ever come across.

An original book with a great story full of twists and turns, excellent characters and no slow points. The story kept me guessing till the end. I was thoroughly taken by this excellent writer who was new to me. One of those audible reads that stands way above the rest. I am now going to look out for more by this author.
