Beginning eight years ago on the outskirts of Birmingham, where car factories have been replaced by Poundland, and London, where frenzied riots give way to Olympic fever, Middle England follows a brilliantly vivid cast of characters through a time of immense change.

Loved this book, very thought provoking, amusing in parts but also sad. Plenty to think about and an accurate overall view of England today. Narration was excellent. I shall certainly listen to more from this author and also the narrator.

If you could sum up Love in a Cold Climate in three words, what would they be?

most amusing, fascinating story and so well read by Patricia Hodge, just the right voices for the various characters, especially Lady Montdore.

What did you like best about this story?

the delicious bubbly humour

What about Patricia Hodge’s performance did you like?

just the right accents for each of the characters which brought them all to life - perfect for the book. I wish she would narrate all the Nancy Mitford books.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

most definitely, even though I have read it many times.

  • Can You Forgive Her?

Can You Forgive Her? is the first of the six in the Palliser series. Trollope inextricably binds together the issues of parliamentary election and marriage, of politics and privacy. The values and aspirations of the governing stratum of Victorian society are ruthlessly examined, and none remains unscathed. But above all Trollope focuses on the predicament of women. 'What should a woman do with her life?' asks Alice Vavasor of herself, and this theme is echoed by every other woman in the audiobook.

I am very familiar with the Trollope books and have just loved this. It is so well done and the humour so much more effective than reading it - no doubt due to the acting skills of Timothy West. I have listened to nearly all the Trollope novels now and Timothy West deserves so much praise. A very enjoyable experience
