With straight-talking advice from renowned psychotherapist Philippa Perry, this is the definitive guide for any parent looking to navigate their past, avoid repeating their own parents' mistakes and ensure they don't land their own kids in therapy. Through the combination of case studies, her own experiences as a parent, and therapeutic insight gained from a career spanning over 20 years, Perry tackles the wider issues of what it actually means to be a parent rather than getting bogged down in the little details.

My son had issues that earned his parents a spot in a course called "Circle of Security". I recognised a LOT of the material and the book delivers it in a great way - much better than the course. I finally "get" it.

Lots of examples. It takes a bit of concentration to use the techniques described in the book but I have managed a few times and it really makes a difference. Previously, if my son was upset about something, I might have tried to point out positive aspects of a situation and thus communicate to him that bad feelings must be avoided. Now I know to respect his feelings and help him describe them. It feels unnatural to me, but it does help.

The material and the messages seem mostly reasonable. I'm not a marketing or branding professional but there are no surprises here, unfortunately. I expected to be surprised and intrigued, considering this is the first book I "read" about the topic. Instead, it's one long yawn, great for falling asleep to.

I was familiar with the concept of "f**k-giving" from a TED talk by the author. I quite like how it values time, but 1 hour (25%) into the book, it seemed I had already heard everything too many times so I decided to spend my f**ks on something else.
