Roman Britain, AD 44. General Plautius' hard-won defeat of Caratacus should have brought peace. But though the land is conquered, it is far from tamed. A puppet king is doing little to calm the hatred of the tribes and bring them under Roman rule. Fighting is in Optio Horatius Figulus' blood. His Celtic ancestry is mocked by his fellow soldiers, but it gives him the toughness essential for survival.

I’ve been reading Wilbur Smith since I was a young man, approx 30 + years, always enjoyed the adventure and evolution of the Courtney’s and the Ballentyne’s. I don’t understand how graphically describing sex scenes adds to the story, always thought a good story was about painting a picture for the mind to interpret. It’s called imagination and it’s what I always enjoyed about Smiths work. Do not like having something that should be a passing comment in the whole story continually dominating the plot. Very poor effort.

Enjoyed the whole story, well written and drew me into the tale, I have read all the Courtney tales so had all the background. Did not however think some of the graphic language used to describe the various love elements added anything to the story. I didn’t need to know about the mechanics of the lovemaking, not very Wilbur Smith in that respect.
