Book was hard to get into at first but the narrator was excellent and that brought the characters- most of whom were not very likeable! - alive. But the juxtaposition of a coming of age of 20 somethings with the pointless and cruel Bosnian conflict was very poignant. I enjoyed it more and more as it went on

This is a compelling story - and one that repeats! As Ursula's life takes different routes the history of the first half of 20th century is reflected in her personal experiences. The book is made by the brilliant narrator who managed to deal with the many characters with subtle changes that are consistent throughout.

A typical Nick Hornby book - funny, poignant and romantic, surprising in places, slight unbelievable in others but overall very good.

Where does Scales of Gold rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is an excellent version of a book I know well from having read it. As with all DD books, the storyline and character portfolio is detailed and convoluted - and Gordon Griffin did a great job of steering the listener through the maze. Although his accents werent as differentiated as other narrators, his emotional handling of the book was far superior
