Celebrated storyteller Stephen King returns to his roots in this tour de force featuring more than 100 characters - some heroic, some diabolical - and a supernatural element as baffling and chilling as any he's ever conjured.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

What made the experience of listening to Gone Girl the most enjoyable?

I love that this book never does what you expect it to do.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character has to be Amy. There are few antagonists who match this utterly twisted individual.

Any additional comments?

There have been quite mixed reviews about this book but for me it has been one of the best listens of the year. Gillian Flynn does not create characters who are particularly likeable but she does make them honest and very real.

The most powerful men in the world were all together in a circle in the middle of the room. Drawing their daggers, they cut their right hands and, above the pile of gold, swore Odysseus’ vow: Helen could marry whom she liked, and the Princes would defend them both.… Everyone’s heard of the wooden horse of Troy, and of the beauty of Helen. Well this is the story as Odysseus saw it, from his boyhood in Ithaca to his participation in the bloody Trojan war itself.

I read this book as a child and was thrilled to find it on Audible. I have now passed it on to my daughter and I hope she gets as much enjoyment from it as I did. This book spawned my love of Greek Mythology. Tony Robinson is a genius! Fantastic!

This book had me gripped from the very start. At times very hard to listen as the subject matter is heartbreaking, but this is the first book by this author I have read and I will definitely be back for more. Even though it was written in the 90s it doesn't feel dated and I love the techno aspect in the book. Also big credit to Seth Michael Donsky for narrating this so well. Fab.

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early 40s, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

This is simply the best book I have read/listened to this year, if not ever. The way JK Rowling can create characters that you feel like you know just makes a good book even better. I cried a flood of tears at the end, and for a few hours after, too. I will be listening to this many more times to come.
