I am listening to the Simon Serrailer series in order and think that this was my favourite so far. A new series of murders to solve provides a good storyline that held my interest. The murders are suspense filled without being gratuitously violent
As with all the other books in the series, Serrailers police work simply provides backdrop for the continued development of the stories that run through this series. It is, I think, essential to read these in order to fully appreciate Hill's skill at creating characters. Once again I was completely drawn into their world and have emerged from it enriched.
The narration is excellent, natural and entertaining.

An enjoyable addition to the needlecraft mystery series. A new setting, with our heroine sleuthing on vacation, provides a new raft of characters. Suspending belief is, as always, required, but this is a pleasant listen.
The narration is, however, something of an acquired taste. The delivery is quite stilted and wouldn't suit everyone. I found that, once I had become used to the style, it didn't spoil the book for me.

I couldn't finish it.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This audiobook was very dark and the violence graphic - not my cup of tea and not easily skimmed over as each victims murder was treated to a gratuitous blow by blow description. The storyline hops between time periods as the author attempts to put flesh on his character, thus creating a detective who is unappealing and in need to a good shake. I was left with a storyline I had no desire to see resolved and a main character I had no interest in.

Would you ever listen to anything by James Craig again?

Absolutely not.

What didn’t you like about Joe Jameson’s performance?

The narration was unimaginative and at times, stilted. I found it an uncomfortable listen from the first.

A thoroughly good listen. Good Victorian mystery with engaging characters. Several strands of story that flow through the series, yet the writer never gets bogged down in detail and keeps the reader keen to hear more. The narration is clear and the various characters are voiced well without being distracting. A gem of a book.
