A walk in the woods takes a sinister turn for police chief Jeffrey Tolliver and medical examiner Sara Linton when they stumble across the body of a young girl. Incarcerated in the ground, all the initial evidence indicates that she has, quite literally, been scared to death. But as Sara embarks on the autopsy, something even more horrifying comes to light. Something which shocks even Sara.

Unfortunately this book wasn't available unabridged so had to purchase the abridged version or miss a book. Having not read an abridged book before, I was disappointed, it felt like reading a book that had pages missing. Karin is very good at all the little sub plots and tentacles that pull the whole story together and this book was missing all that. Won't do abridged again

They have never seen a murder like it. A talented tattoo artist is using poison instead of ink. His victim is a young woman. And on her skin he's left a message: 'the second'. Drafted in to investigate, NYPD detective Lincoln Rhyme and his associate Amelia Sachs find the scene has been scrubbed of evidence. All except for one trace - a scrap of paper that connects this case with one they will never forget.
