Great performances but wasted on a desperately weak story. Characters were illogical and downright boring

Don’t know why it is considered a cult. Nothing special in the story and even with the wildest imagination difficult to treat it as a parable. Narration was actually very good but too ‘meaningful’ and intense for the banalities of the story

Kept waiting for a twist or even a gentle surprise but was agonisingly predictable right through the book.

Great performance. Will probably make for a good movie, though the story and twists don’t really hold any surprises.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Perhaps appeals to the child for all of us who grew up with PacMan and DigDug but I couldn't put my headphones down

The narration was slow and very tedious. As a result a fascinating story because just too boring to put up with. i then bought the book and absolutely loved it.

The performance was great and the book keeps you engrossed as such thrillers do. However there are many inconsistencies in the story. Without giving anything away, it jarred me that a new terrorist incident was being announced every one hour or so, with no awareness or suspicion among people at large, who seemed to be going about their daily routine. The main twist was blindingly obvious and the fact the police hadn't picked up the discrepancy when it occured nearly made me put the book down. My first one by SL, will try another but this will make for a better movie than a book.

Superb - can't wait for the movie

What was most disappointing about Lionel Shriver’s story?

It is frustrating when a dystopian novel uses the present day as the past, and then skips forward 15 years to a new future but with no bridge of events on the way. The book is murky and confused.
