At 14, Turtle Alveston knows the use of every gun on her wall; that chaos is coming and only the strong will survive it; that her daddy loves her more than anything else in this world. And he'll do whatever it takes to keep her with him. She doesn't know why she feels so different from the other girls at school; why the line between love and pain can be so hard to see; why making a friend may be the bravest and most terrifying thing she has ever done; and what her daddy will do when he finds out....

Loved it but hard to say why when parts were so disturbing. I think it was the depth and descriptive narrative that did it for me. The brutal honesty of Turtle. The complete access to a damaged mind. I think the blurb from Stephen King calling it a masterpiece is completely fair. Very different for me but I'm glad I tried it.

If you have enjoyed her other books you'll love it just as much. Set during the second world war, following the story of Verity and Ruby. Predictable but twisty at the same time. Heart warming and gripping.

Like all the books in the series this is excellent. Yes, Roy occasionally changes accents etc but to be fair it's weeks of reading for the old guy to have got it perfect would have taken forever. I find listening whilst cooking or doing other tasks relaxing and didn't have time to sit reading.
