It begins with an abduction. The routine of a family shopping trip is shattered when Michelle Spivey is snatched as she leaves the mall with her young daughter. The police search for her, her partner pleads for her release, but in the end...they find nothing. It’s as if she disappeared into thin air. A month later, on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, medical examiner Sara Linton is at lunch with her boyfriend Will Trent, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. But the serenity of the summer’s day is broken by the wail of sirens.

I love Karins books normally and felt like I’d been waiting ages for this new one. However it just didn’t cut it for me. In a world where I have to read about the threat of terrorists everyday and sick men doing awful things to women and young girls, I was personally disappointed that this storyline was playing with those themes and away from the character lead themes of the past. I just didn’t connect with it and much prefer the small town thrillers than this mass scale saga.

It presents Reacher for the first time, as the tough ex-military cop of no fixed abode: a righter of wrongs, the perfect action hero. Jack Reacher jumps off a bus and walks 14 miles down a country road into Margrave, Georgia. An arbitrary decision he's about to regret.

Don't get me wrong - the guy is clearly talented and can only work with what he is given. But the number or "he said", "I said", "she said"...became beyond painful to listen to. He is talented enough in his use of voice to differentiate between characters.. and yet CONSTANTLY... "he said", "I said", "she said" broke up every bit of conversation and story telling and said in such a FLAT and bored way... even the narrator was sick of it.
I also feel like ... yeah Jack is cool. He is a badass and an undeniable talent to any taskforce. But the narrator read it to the point of cocky... even to the point of boredom... like.. yeah yeah I'm used to finding my brother dead and involved in a larger conspiracy ring.. there is never any element of fear or excitement or passion or... anything. Just simple indifference. And I was almost screaming out loud about how badly the tale was told after being such a fan of the book.........

Everything was delivered in the same monotone and with such a strain it made it so hard to listen to. The story was OK but I saw it all coming...nothing was a surprise and I was pretty unimpressed.

This book is absolutely brilliant and wonderfully performed. I was fully immersed in the world Karin created and as always, she delighted in both her characters and story direction. Reading that some people have said it is a bit predictable... well those people seemed to have missed the point of the book...?! Karin masterfully intertwines details and clues throughout the book so that we discover and think in the way her character also does. It really is an exceptional book and the performance by Kathleen Early is utterly immersive.
