This is definitely not the sort of book I would normally read, but gave it a bash as the daily deal...what an unexpected pleasure....I listened to it non-stop...never sure what was going to happen next. In fact I found it fairly stressful...I really cared about the characters, worried about them..wanted a happy ending for them all (well..most of them!)..the book was beautifully narrated...I couldn't fault it....

Very clever

Very disjointed....didn't care about any of the characters...far fetched.....there seemed to be a fair amount of narrative which was nothing to do with the story and didn't enhance it in any way....not my cup of tea!

Loved this...

This was back on track for me as I really didn't enjoy the second book. Good strong storyline...getting to know Strike and Robyn more and more....the fourth book will be interesting!!

Bought this not knowing what to expect....REALLY enjoyed it...great story, painted a very vivid picture of Stalinist Russia, would definitely recommend.

I lost interest about half way through..the basis of the story was good, but it weakened in the second half. In my view Saul Reichlin was not the right person to narrate..his voice isn't dark enough, Sean Barratt would have been a better choice.

A good yarn, but it was obvious right from the start who the killer was. This is a straight story, no red herrings to make you question who is who and who did what, which is a bit of a shame. In effect, I listened the book knowing exactly what was going to happen, but enjoyed the journey along the way. Well narrated but the story is a little one dimensional for my liking.

Written from the perspective of a dementia sufferer, I found this book terrifying. In some ways it ambles along pleasantly, switching between Maud's early and twilight years, but the darkness of her condition hangs over the story like a black cloud. The most disturbing aspect for me is how Maud forgets the most simple things, but tries to rationalise her thoughts. The book is extremely well written and very well narrated, Anna Bentinck has the perfect voice for Maud, and portrays both the confused elderly lady and the young Maud perfectly. This book is a must read, and will perhaps offer an understanding of dementia we can use on a daily basis.
