Eileen Sharp and Vic Hightower were frustrated. After years of profitable, predictable growth, Swan Services was in a rut. Meetings were called and discussions held, but few decisions were made and even less got done. People were pointing fingers and assigning blame, but nothing happened to solve Swan’s mounting problems. It felt as though they were working harder than ever but with less impact. The company Eileen and Vic had founded and built for 10 years was a different place. It just wasn’t fun anymore.

The 80/20 rule is a fascinating concept, but this is lost within this book. It will send you to sleep. 80% of this book is rubbish - 20% of the population might find a nugget in here; perhaps that was the authors intension to prove the rule.....

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work.

You will be hooked on this book within a minute, it is excellent and full of wit. Takes a simple topic which of course is very complex and makes it simple again. We all need this book in our lives. The author links stories from his childhood with his sister and this adds an extra layer of authenticity. High praise for this book, this author. Find him on TED Talks - he is excellent.

In business, the right behaviors matter. But getting it right is tricky. Even when we acknowledge the need to change what we do and how we do it, life has a habit of getting in the way, upsetting even the best-laid plans. And just how do we manage those situations that can provoke even the most rational among us into behaving in ways we would rather forget?

50% of the world will find this book fantastic - 50% will be scratching their heads. I can relate to both camps, the concept here is really "be positive" and focus on key outcomes as this ultimately drives success and behaviour - but the essence of this book is about wishing for success and that process alone will secure that success. I don't like the analogy that links illness such as cancer or a disability as being a result of negative thinking........This must have been written as part of a ceremony to secure tenure in a cult.

Concept really good and the content follows through. So from a development viewpoint this is really good. Just be prepared for Shaggy from Scooby-Doo to make an appearance throughout which will land up doing your head in.

No

Would you be willing to try another book from James Watt? Why or why not?

No - he gets lost in his own self arrogance.

Did Business for Punks inspire you to do anything?

Watch his story on BBC

Any additional comments?

The story behind this business is great. The owner/author gets lost in his own self importance and that invalidates the useful content. Its an interesting listen if you can detract from the arrogance.
