Fun and frivolous

Enjoyable romantic chic lit, mostly (but not all) set around Christmas time. Easy listening while cooking or wrapping presents.

A great dramatisation of a classic spy tale

Grippingly good!

I'm not usually a fan of this kind of thriller, but this dramatisation had me gripped from start to finish. I listened to it while I was doing a 12 mile run, and It had me so absorbed that the miles just flew by. Highly recommended!

Story
Ancient Rome matters. Its history of empire, conquest, cruelty and excess is something against which we still judge ourselves. Its myths and stories - from Romulus and Remus to the rape of Lucretia - still strike a chord with us. And its debates about citizenship, security and the rights of the individual still influence our own debates on civil liberty today. SPQR is a new look at Roman history from one of the world's foremost classicists.

A very personal interpretation
Reviewed: 14-02-16
Mary Beard's SPQR attempts to widen her overview of the first millennium of Roman history to include the lives of the slaves, women and conquered peoples of the Empire. There is not much new information here for those already familiar with this period of history, but her own personal take on some of the major controversies is interesting and often irreverent.
The narrator spoiled my enjoyment of this book slightly - her phrasing and pronounciation were at times slightly odd and off putting, and she also sometimes sounded rather bored!
