As my second sortie into the classics after Les Miserables, this did not disappoint. The characters were beautifully drawn and I loved Dantes from the start - what an astonishing character. The narrator used his voice to full effect and brought all the characters to life so well. Its another long listen, but the time just passed so quickly and I couldn't wait for the working day to end so that I could get in the car and immerse myself in this story again. An awesome listen and I was left wanting more. I felt like I was waving goodbye to an old friend at the end.

I came upon this book by chance - I liked the look of the cover - it was that simple. That was where the simplicity ended. What an astonishing read. I have never come across an author like Zafon - beautifully crafted story which takes you on an amazing literary journey. A book about books - sounds like a dull read but it is so far removed from dull. Do books have souls? This book could go a long way to convincing you that they do ..... I've gone on to read more of Zafon's books, but this is the one which grabbed me and is head and shoulders above the rest.

My first trip into the world of Wilbur Smith - my husband has been reading him for years and I thought he was a writer for boys - how wrong I was. I devoured this book and have gone on to finish the first series and am now attacking the second series. I'm delighted to have a wish list full of this author and am thrilled to see how many more novels there are just waiting for me to dive into it. The Courtney novels are fabulous - love, intrigue, jealousy, family feuding, war, hope - plenty of substance to interest any reader.

It's what your ears have been waiting for.....

At over 66 hours of listening, this is a lot of book for one credit. I was taking my 80 year old father to see the live show in London and wanted to get a handle on the story before we went - I was blown away by it - a huge story of an immense character, of love, loss, sacrifice, intrigue - you name it this book has it. I wasn't sure of the narrator at first, but soon grew to love his voice and it suited the story so well. I can't rate this book highly enough - but be prepared to have to put your life on hold while you immerse yourself in this truly astonishing novel.
