A few days have passed since Jason's confrontation with Alfred and he's debating whether to reenter Awaken Online. Alfred has made a proposition that Jason isn't certain he should accept. After the battle with Alexion, Jason has also been appointed the Regent of the Twilight Throne. He must assume the mantle of ruling an undead city - with everything that entails. His first task is to investigate the dark keep that looms over the city's marketplace. This act will lead to a chain of events that might ensure his city's survival or create new enemies.

This book was even better than the first book in the series and actually has me wishing the AO game was real... I want to put on a VR headset and play AO right now! This book has me wishing somebody would actually create that game!
A fantastic fun story.
It's also fascinating how the author swaps the stereotypical fantasy hero and anti-hero. I've always seen myself as the white knight but this story has me wishing to be that necromancer leading my own army of zombies into battle, right now!
Great work.

He's in desperate need of an escape, and this game is his ticket to finally feeling the type of power and freedom that are so sorely lacking in his real life. Awaken Online is a brand new virtual reality game that just hit the market, promising an unprecedented level of immersion. Yet Jason quickly finds himself pushed down a path he didn't expect. In this game, he isn't the hero. There are no damsels to save. There are no bad guys to vanquish.

When you discover the world is a computer program, and you figure out that by altering the code you can time travel and perform acts that seem like magic, what can possibly go wrong? Pretty much everything. Just ask Brit, who has jumped around in time with such abandon that she has to coexist with multiple versions of herself. Now, Brit the Elder finds that her memories don't match Brit the Younger's.

I love the Magic 2.0 series and the original idea but this 5th book focuses too much on some dull minutiae of time travel with layers upon layers of complications that just weren't that interesting.
The idea of hacking into the operating system of the known universe opens up a ton of other more interesting possibilities and the time travel idea would seem to limit some of these possibilities rather than breaking them open. Perhaps the author could attribute glitches directly to the overuse of time travel, and so limit its use, and instead explore new features to hack?

They've created enough colonies so humanity shouldn't go extinct. But political squabbles have a bad habit of dying hard, and the Brazilian probes are still trying to take out the competition. And the Bobs have picked a fight with an older, more powerful species with a large appetite and a short temper.

The author seems to write with the mindset of a technical engineer resulting in fascinating detail and believable steppingstone technological developments, with a good mix of humour and moral debate thrown in. Hooked me from the chapter of the first book of the series.
He dealt well with the awkward topic of planet buster technology... ie once you 'build' a reactionless engine you could just throw a planet at your enemy... although I must admit I was already shouting at the first book to just chuck a relativistic rock at the queen of the hive Others, or the Prime as the author named it ;-)
A fantastic book... More likr that please! :-)
