My Dear I Wanted to Tell You cover art

I was gripped, I was shocked, I fell in love!

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

This deservedly won the Galaxy audiobook of the year. A love story set during the First World War. I devoured this one. It starts out as a seemingly conventional novel and turns into an absolutely riveting and original listen…. No spoilers here but prepare to be shocked, to fall in love and take this gem to your heart.

A Visit from the Goon Squad cover art

A Gem of a novel

Overall

If you loved David Mitchell's 'Cloud Atlas' or 'Ghost Written' you are really in for a treat.

A Visit from the Goon Squad is really a series of brilliantly conceived short stories and each short story is a gem in its own right. Where Mitchell comparisons can be drawn is the way in which all the characters in the novel are interconnected, so that you feel like you are getting to know and love a group of friends and family, their loves, their sorrows, their histories and their relationships with each other, past and present. Subtly crafted and utterly compelling I felt genuine loss when I finished this novel and my time with these characters came to an end.

The Life and Times of Tony Blair cover art

Great insight, interesting listen

This is a fascinating insight into Tony Blair’s rise to power (the untimely death of John Smith, former leader of the Labour party and the deal he made with Gordon Brown) but also, a record of some of the extraordinary events that occurred during his term as PM including 9/11, the rise of terrorism and the Second Gulf War, the Death of Princess Diana and the Northern Island peace process.

Having read (and loved) the book I wondered how well the author would do with the different voices... I shouldn't have worried, he's done a fantastic job and I enjoyed this enormously. One for a long journey. Sit back and enjoy!
