Had major problems with this book. Downloaded first time, it was slow. When tried to listen a little alert came up stating it was unable to run it. So deleted and tried again, second time it stopped about ten minutes into first story! Read tales some years back and was looking forward to listening to them. No wonder it was so cheap! Not sure why its so bad running/downloading. The narrator was dire. what i heard of it too.. Avoid if I were you. sending it back

I am sure this was a great work at its first publication, however the writing method is now very old. I have read Lord of the Rings and other long books with ease. But Dicken's long winded, ramblings are tedious after awhile. If you need it for study/education or are a Dickens fan, go for it. Otherwise keep well away.

Rather annoyed the author could not get a basic fact right, doubly so. Firstly the the Royal Welch Fusiliers were merged in 2009 with the Royal Welsh regiment. Secondly the name was not Royal Welsh Fusiliers, it was The Royal Welch Fusiliers. The Regiment is now (and at the time the novel was set) simply The Royal Welsh. Some may call me pedantic, but this distracted at me once. IN fact as my grandfather fought with The Royal Welch fusiliers I found the basic lack of research insulting.

Great story wrecked by a dire narrator. Nigel Planer is brilliant as a comedy actor. However, for me he should not narrate. He doesn't have the wide variety of voices at his disposal needed for discworld novels.

Boys own fun I guess.

Good fun to a degree, but not really for me. Can't really take to the Tory snob Captain to be honest. Good story though.

Quite interesting to begin with, quite fascinating actually, for about 35% of the book. However there after it became rather more dour and a tad tedious. I am sure fans of his will love it. Rather too much an advert for ITN. Not so much an Autobiography, more ones man view of ITN, how 'brilliant' it was, and views of historic events. Credit returned

I have read most of the Drizzt books and was looking forward to listening to them instead. However I was very disappointed in the narrator, who just droned the book out, with nothing really to define one character from another by voice. I will be returning the books asap. Salvatore should get these books re narrated by a decent narrator.

Brilliant entertainment,.

Very good listen. Brilliant acting making for wonderfully 3 dimensional characters. Mr Pullman is a great narrator, holding the atmosphere so very well. The actor who played Lyra was very good indeed. IN fact there were all very good, but Lyra was very real. At 55 years of age, I was enthralled from start to finish , and did not want to stop listening! Highly recommended!

Philip Pullman is one of the great authors of our time. Sublime descriptions, enthralling story lines, twists and so on. I am 55 (nearly 56), and I enjoyed listening to what is defined a children's book greatly. However you really don't notice, most of the time. The characters are so well defined by the brilliant actors, who play the parts so well, you accept them as real. Yes...at my age, I feel for those in peril. The digs at organised religion are there, often subtle. However above all its a great adventure! Enjoy I say, give it a listen whatever your age.

While I found the story quite good, I found the narration often irritating. The gaps between each characters sentences were too often just a too far apart to be comfortable to listen to. To me it doesn't sound natural...almost as if they were recorded in sections and were not glued together right. The narration was not easy to listen to...I was relieved when the book finished

Began listening to the second book...and its the same.

Not listening to other books...however I will purchase them on kindle at some point.
