There's something about this series. It's absolutely not the greatest story ever written, some of the plot lines are dragging out too long and it can't seem to decide how adult it wants to be, but I find myself looking forward to each new book, thoroughly enjoying the performance and then being disappointed that the next one isn't yet available. It's wonderful escapism and a really good listen.

Sunday Times and New York Times best-selling author Peter V. Brett brings one of the most imaginative fantasy sagas of the 21st century to an epic close. The war has begun.... For time out of mind, bloodthirsty demons have stalked the night, culling the human race to scattered remnants dependent on half-forgotten magics to protect them. Two heroes arose - men as close as brothers yet divided by bitter betrayal.

If you enjoy this series then you will be pleased with the last book. Still well voiced it reaches a proper conclusion, but still leaves enough hooks for future stories. If you haven’t listened to any of the series then lucky you. You have it all to enjoy.

Listened to this because the film is coming out and don't regret doing so. It's a good story, well narrated. It's just short of great, but probably because the darker elements are toned down. Definitely not a waste of a credit.

Any additional comments?

Now I have your attention, don't buy this book because it is the first story in Brandon Sanderson's collection of stories Arcanum Unbounded, luckily it just cost me a credit to find out.

The story itself is really good as is so much of his work so enjoy it, just in the right place.

What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Where does NPCs rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not the greatest book I have ever listened to but at the same time it left me with a smile on my face. It's easy listening, the plot isn't complex, the characters fit really well and the premise is good. I enjoyed it enough to buy the second in the series which is what you would hope a good story would encourage you to do.

A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived and there is rumour of revolt.

Loyalty Pays

I listened to this book in loyalty for Brandon Sanderson's efforts in finishing the Wheel of Time series. I am very glad that I did. It has clearly defined characters, a well envisioned world, an awesome magic system and provides hours of enjoyment. Michael Kramer definitely does the work justice. Don't expect complex, deep interwoven plots but be prepared to thoroughly enjoy yourself.
