Behind our democracy lurks a powerful but unaccountable network of people who wield massive power and reap huge profits in the process. In exposing this shadowy and complex system that dominates our lives, Owen Jones sets out on a journey into the heart of our Establishment, from the lobbies of Westminster to the newsrooms, boardrooms, and trading rooms of Fleet Street and the City.

... Still worth reading for the multiple examples of how undemocratic society is.
Excellent narrator, though I had to slow him down to 90%.

In 2016, one of the giants of modern journalism fell: Gawker Media, infamous for saying what other outlets wouldn't say, was sued for publishing Hulk Hogan's sex tape, lost the case and went bust. After countless other lawsuits it seemed that Gawker had finally run out of luck. But luck had nothing to do with it. Peter Thiel, PayPal founder and billionaire investor, had masterminded the whole thing.

Really enjoyed this well researched story about Thiel vs Gawker with enough detail and certain amount of philosophizing to make it into one of my favourite books this year from a content perspective. A good amount of detail, yet also a good amount of reflection on various interpretations of facts presented.

However, the narrator's strength of slow reading when conveying details becomes soporific when using the same slow methodical intonation to relate the exciting, surprising and weird that also regularly occurs in the book

Shooting Up: A Short History of Drugs and War examines how intoxicants have been put to the service of states, empires, and their armies throughout history. Since the beginning of organized combat, armed forces have prescribed drugs to their members for two general purposes: to enhance performance during combat and to counter the trauma of killing and witnessing violence after it is over.

Gave me insight into war that in retrospect seems so obvious, ie the importance of drugs for managing human behaviour.
Would thoroughly recommend. Ex army friend of mine commented that almost all war history books fail to mention this important factor in war, which is as true now as it was 2000 years ago.
