Doug Stanhope has been drunkenly stumbling down the back roads and dark alleys of stand-up comedy for over a quarter of a century, roads laden with dank bars, prostitutes, cheap drugs, farm animals, evil dwarfs, public nudity, menacing third-world police, psychotic breaks, sex offenders, and some understandable suicides. You know, just for levity. While other comedians were seeking fame, Stanhope was seeking immediate gratification, dark spectacle, or sometimes just his pants.

I’ve laughed out loud, face contorted to the point of public shame and secreted more serotonin than the Golden Goose of Prozac.
The most surprising thing about Stanhope is not the front row in Heaven gambling risqué jokes, not the razor sharp, chemistry-defying mental spark he wields about, but the fact that somehow you get the sense that you’re witnessing a sincere, honest and, dare I say it, good human being. Refreshing!

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

I had no idea Steve Martin was such a great wordsmith. I found myself beside him, living the journey with him almost as if I were on a guided tour through a flashback.
I guess hungry for more I would have liked to continue into subsequent years and developments.
I would recommend this book as a keystone in the philosophy of comedy.
Well done, Steve!

This book is a heartfelt endorsement of our capacity to generate health within ourselves and support this in another human being who is open to developing.
To summarise this book in a simple phrase, I would say: Functional Medicine Coaching is a description of deep respect, connection and encouragement directed towards improving health.
