Since you were old enough to hold a job, you've been hoodwinked to believe that wealth can be created by blindly trusting in the uncontrollable and unpredictable markets: the housing market, the stock market, and the job market. I call this soul-sucking, dream-stealing dogma "The Slowlane" - an impotent financial gamble that dubiously promises wealth in a wheelchair. For those who don't want a lifetime subscription to "settle-for-less", there is an alternative.

If you struggle with binge eating, emotional eating, stress eating, or if you repeatedly manage to lose weight only to gain it all back, you may be approaching things with the wrong mindset. Most contemporary thought on overeating and bingeing focuses on healing and self-love. But people who've overcome food and weight issues often report it was more like capturing and caging a rabid dog than learning to love their inner child.

One basic need all children have, educator Alfie Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful and largely unknown research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval.

Just one star down for the impression that the stance of this book appears to dismiss the stance of Dr Barkley, another expert in the field of ADHD. I have also heard similar from Dr Barkley dismissing any notion that ADHD could ever be considered a gift.

I believe the two (three) experts compliment each other in ways that they cannot recognise themselves as they are wrapped up/invested in their own approaches.

This book is a wonderful resource for getting the best all round help for children with ADHD. Dr Barkley's information about the realities of the deficits involved and the very real problems they can lead to if not addressed is equally valid and he gives very accurate and good advice. This is a classic case of the approaches and information provided by each, when considered together, being way greater than the sum of the parts. Thank you both for providing excellent resources.

As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption - even murder and genocide - generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, bestselling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie.

Fifteen years ago I was given the advice to live my life, whether seen or unseen, as though my actions would be tomorrow's front page headlines. Although I felt at the time that I was a pretty truthful and ethical person it was a turning point that has made this past fifteen years so much more relaxed, enjoyable and genuine. Sam's book, although much more deeply thought out, is in the same vein.
