The mystery of Elizabeth Keane's father is one that has never been solved by the people of Buncarragh - not for lack of speculation. Her mother, Patricia, had been assumed a spinster until she began dating a mysterious man from out of town and within months had left Buncarragh and had married. Less than two years later, Patricia was back, with a new baby in her arms but no new husband by her side and unbendingly silent about her recent past. A secret she would take with her to her grave.

In the 1920s the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And this was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.

In the boot were six homemade pipe bombs, all linked to detonate at the same time from a single call on a brand-new pay-as-you-go phone found on the target. Special Branch also found Chinese Type 56 assault rifles with eight full magazines of ammunition. His target was a local school. He planned to attack two coaches of teenagers returning home after a school trip to France. Approximately 60 children, their accompanying teachers and their waiting parents. He was going to kill them all.

Great book, I’m from the north so appreciated the narrators ‘proper Manc accent ‘ but I can imagine that some people might find it a bit hard going. I was left feeling grateful to the author for all that he had sacrificed for his country. Really well done to Marc for an excellent book and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.

It’s a complicated style to listen to, maybe a bit better in written form as you could flip back and forth to keep up. Well narrated (even though she can be a bit school teacher)

This is the first Kate Atkinson book I have listened to. I haven’t ruled her out completely but if the next Brodie instalment is this erratic, I probably won’t bother again.

Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods and the woman who was killed. Since then she's been forgetting everything: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn't have a baby.... What she can't forget is the woman she might have saved, the terrible nagging guilt, the silent calls she's receiving and the feeling that someone's watching her.

The narrator was good. I can’t quite remember what the story was about as the constant waffling threw me off.

Great book, one of the best I’v listened to for a while. Clever because it’s actually manages to be a very engaging murder mystery, no (very little) swearing or unnecessary gore despite being still quite gritty. Go ahead and download this. You won’t be disappointed. Liked the characters and the family. Narrator particularly good as well.

I just can't understand how someone like him could do something like that. Amid the worst drought to ravage Australia in a century, it hasn't rained in small country town Kiewarra for two years. Tensions in the community become unbearable when three members of the Hadler family are brutally murdered. Everyone thinks Luke Hadler, who committed suicide after slaughtering his wife and six-year-old son, is guilty.
