I was enthralled by this book. It quickly became one of the few I couldn't stop listening to. The fighting action was totally realistic and the very detailed background information on the the religious and terrorist groups was very informative. The profound honesty of the author came through and I felt his pain as he contemplated suicide. I did find the narration far too upper class for the hard fighting Royal Marine Commando non-commissioned officer, but more like the voice of a senior commissioned officer, however it didn't spoil a great book.

I wasn't impressed with the early chapters, but it sort of wound up, getting tighter like a spring. The pace reached fever pitch at chapter 12 onwards and by 15 it became an classic not put downable thriller. I did find the narration like machinegun fire in slow motion, staccato like at times. It could have been smoother. All togehter an exciting book, honest, truthful and compelling. I ended up with nothing but the highest regards for the Royal Marine Commandos in the book. Even though my service was very under another cap badge.

A good story, with gripping moments of tension. Shame the dialogue of all the radio transmissions were unbelievably detailed, polite and obviously adapted and written for non service persons to understand. The heavy hand of the security service censor has affected the accuracy, which is a shame, but necessary in the interesting times we live on.

I found this very gripping and thought provoking book was improved immensely in the audio version. So easily listened to where reading the book would have been impossible. Highly recommended.
