On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

My only criticisms - longer and more!
Very interesting and the flicks/twists popped in by Stephen Fry are masterful.
His voice is made for audio.
This is one of those things where you would say, 'you had me at hello'!!

The woman haunted by the fate of her predecessor. Eleven days after the death of Anne Boleyn, Jane is dressing for her wedding to the King. She has witnessed at firsthand how courtly play can quickly turn to danger and knows she must bear a son...or face ruin. This new Queen must therefore step out from the shadows cast by Katherine and Anne - in doing so, can she expose a gentler side to the brutal King?

I cannot wait for the next 3, so that we have all the six queens. Brings history to life. I know its based on fact and of course, there will be fiction attached to make it work, but my god it works! I absolutely love these and feel transported to the Tudor Court and the struggles of each Queen to survive the tormented and power driven King. This is my current favourite (as we still have 3 to go) Jane Seymour; no longer a door mat! Highly recommend.

For 44 years, Elizabeth I guided England through religious upheavals and plots to overthrow the government. Courted by all the most powerful princes in Europe, she baffled her advisors by refusing to marry any of them. And when England stood under threat of invasion by the most powerful nation in Europe, Elizabeth's navy destroyed the Spanish Armada so decisively that it was seen as an act of God.

I was really looking forward to this one and it was so shockingly read that I couldn't continue. Total waste.
The narrator was appalling, going so far as to not even say Elizabeth 1st (the first) and instead said Elizabeth ONE. I mean - what the hell? Very very let down by the narration. Don't bother.
