Ancient Rome matters. Its history of empire, conquest, cruelty and excess is something against which we still judge ourselves. Its myths and stories - from Romulus and Remus to the rape of Lucretia - still strike a chord with us. And its debates about citizenship, security and the rights of the individual still influence our own debates on civil liberty today. SPQR is a new look at Roman history from one of the world's foremost classicists.

In this book you will learn over and over that there is an alternative interpretation of the traditional version of ancient history. Not all was what it seemed to be. I enjoyed Mary Beard's fascinating insight in the life of ancient Rome. I admire the knowledge and intelligence of this author.

"How to Be Human" is even better than Ruby's previous book which was very enjoyable. The author has a very unique way to communicate her ideas.: simple, clear and funny. Here she has the collaboration of a doctor and a monk, both of them adding interest and knowledge to the book. The last chapter about discovering her family tree is highly emotional and summarises all the content of the book.
