Never Disappoints

I am a real fan of John Finniemore's writing. Crisp sharp dialogue with a cast that can't be beaten. How he can write Douglas' barbs and yet still play the goofy other worldly Arthur is a mystery. Long may it last. I look forward to each new series with great anticipation.

When her friends from the Tuesday Night Club visit Miss Marple's house, the conversation often turns to unsolved crimes. Trying to solve these 13 mysteries are Raymond West, a young writer; the artist Joyce Lemprière; Dr Pender, the clergyman, who claims to know the hidden side of human character; Mr Petherick, a lawyer who is only interested in the logical approach; and Sir Henry Clithering, whose experience as commissioner of Scotland Yard speaks for itself.

What a Treat

A treat indeed to have the great Joan Hickson (surely the definitive Miss Marple) read some of Christie's greatest stories. Her quietly authoritative voice lends itself beautifully to the prose text and the clarity of her tones makes listening a pure joy. What a pity she passed on before the whole gamut of Miss Marple mysteries could have been recorded. That would be an archive worth having.

"Oscar Wilde's Fairy Tales continue to exert the same pull over the imagination and emotions as they did when he first read them to his children in the 1880s. Written with inspired poetic intensity and sudden flowerings of the matchless wit for which he is so well remembered, the stories combine the wisdom of parables with the impact of drama."

A Beautiful Combination

I have long loved listening to Stephen Fry's narrations and what a treat this is to have him read Oscar Wilde, a part he (Fry) was born to play and did so well. Some people feel Wilde is rather passe but I have long believed him to be one of the greatest writers in the English language, carefully judged phrases and word structure generally, perhaps second only to Shakespeare and well above some modern writers. Oscar Wilde and Stephen Fry, a beautiful combination indeed.

Even Better.....

This shows that series 1 was not a fluke. This is even better. The games the crew play to stave off boredom during flights are truly inventive and are really funny signs of how tedious life can be. If you haven't heard this or series 1 yet what are you doing? Buy this now, download it immediately and listen to it over and over again to catch all the comedic nuances. Like I said of series 1, you will not be disappointed.

John Finnemore (Dead Ringers & Mitchell & Webb) has written this brilliant new sitcom starring Stephanie Cole, Roger Allam & Benedict Cumberbatch. Cabin Pressure is set in a small airline business. The flipside of the glamorous world of international airlines.

This is simply wonderful. Great writing, great cast, great timing. That John Finnemore both writes and plays the hapless Arthur beautifully shows that his is a talent worth watching. Benedict Cumberbatch as the frustrated Senior (as in only) Captain is marvellous. Stephanie Cole's CEO of MJN Air is a delight to the ears. And nobody does laconic sarcasm like Roger Allam. If you haven't already heard this on Radio 4/4 Extra you've missed a real treat. Buy it now and listen to it immediately. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
