More than 2,000 years later, Plato's Republic remains astonishingly relevant to our everyday lives. It poses one question after another that might well have been drawn from the headlines and debates of our nation's recent history: What sort of person should rule the state? Are all citizens equal before the law? Should everyone have equal access to health care? Plato's greater inquiry, however, was into the question of defining justice itself and the reasons why a person would choose a life aligned with that virtue.

Really well structured and excellent lecture series going through the republic. Prof. David Roochnik is gives a clear and constantly engaging analysis, thoroughly exploring the text, and also setting context and referencing more contemporary ideas in their relation to the republic.

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless. The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns. The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife.

Historians universally agree that Thucydides was the greatest historian who has ever lived, and that his story of the Peloponnesian conflict is a marvel of forensic science and fine literature. That such a triumph of intellectual accomplishment was created at the end of the fifth century B.C. in Greece is, perhaps, not so surprising, given the number of original geniuses we find in that period. But that such an historical work would also be simultaneously acknowledged as a work of great literature and a penetrating ethical evaluation of humanity is one of the miracles of ancient history.

Great rendition, fair length (as unabridged) and enjoyed throughout. Having read the text it was fantastic, as listening gives a slightly different tack on visualising the battles / events as described. Recommend listening at x1.25 speed. Additional post analysis was good addition. Obv. purely ornamental, but enjoyed the musical interludes that punctuate the volumes greatly, and they add nicely to the athmosphere.
