Fresh from the staggering success of The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, Marcus Goldman is struggling to write his third novel. A chance encounter in Florida throws him some inspiration from a surprising source: Alexandra Neville, the beautiful, phenomenally successful singer and Marcus' first love. All at once memories of his childhood come flooding back. Memories of a family torn apart by tragedy and a once glorious legacy reduced to shame and ruin.

After TTATHQA I was hoping for more of the same in TBB, yet if anything I believe it to be even more powerful. I don’t wish to give too much away, other than to say that the way in which the themes are put together, and the manner in which the story unfolds, simply grabs you by the guts and when you least it expect, makes you feel you’re finding out about your own family. I will forever be touched by this book, and in the case of this audiobook, by the wonderful recording by Robert Slade.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. I had read the first 20 chapters of the book but due to a lack of time available to read and an abundance of time to listen whilst driving, I went for this. I’m glad I did. RG does an amazing job of narrating and I sincerely hope he does the next Robert Galbraith book.
