But when a new businessman, Joseph Dawson, enters their lives, both Charlotte and her father decide he's the man for her, and within six months Charlotte marries the dashing mill owner from Accrington. Then a young mill worker is found dead in the swollen River Ribble. Jessica Trenchard is a spirited and, at times, wayward girl - to the point that her father, Clem, is considering remarrying, just to provide her with a suitable role model. But Jessica's tender care of the distressed and speechless girl she discovers in a field shows that she isn't just a fun-loving tomboy. Her compassion touches the heart of Kane Pengerran, eldest son of the Trenchards' landlord, who has reasons for his own for desiring the love of a sensitive woman.

The christening of little Harry Pengarron brings old scores to light, as Oliver and Clem meet face to face for the first time in years.

I'm so fed up with people saying they think Jeffery Archer's books will not be worth reading, or expressing a personal opinion of the man himself. The man's a genius with storytelling. I've never yet read one of his books and been disappointed, and I so admire the man, who uses every opportunity life offers, to write novels that have an authenticity about them. I loved this book, but cannot think of one of his that was not a winner. What a wonderful buy!!!
