The great Norse myths are woven into the fabric of our storytelling - from Tolkien, Alan Garner and Rosemary Sutcliff to Game of Thrones and Marvel Comics. They are also an inspiration for Neil Gaiman's own award-bedecked, best-selling fiction. Now he reaches back through time to the original source stories in a thrilling and vivid rendition of the great Norse tales.

In September 2008 the Great Financial Crisis, triggered by the collapse of Lehman brothers, shook the world. A decade later its spectre still haunts us. As the appalling scope and scale of the crash was revealed, the financial institutions that had symbolised the West's triumph since the end of the Cold War, seemed - through greed, malice and incompetence - to be about to bring the entire system to its knees.

A comprehensive, thorough and fascinating analysis of the events of the 2008 crash and its aftermath. As a layman, I found some of the economic fine detail hard to master, not helped I think by listening to the audiobook version, where it's less easy to go back and review bits of what you've just heard to ensure you've understood it.

The Greek myths are amongst the greatest stories ever told, passed down through millennia and inspiring writers and artists as varied as Shakespeare, Michelangelo, James Joyce and Walt Disney. They are embedded deeply in the traditions, tales and cultural DNA of the West. You'll fall in love with Zeus, marvel at the birth of Athena, wince at Cronus and Gaia's revenge on Ouranos, weep with King Midas and hunt with the beautiful and ferocious Artemis.

I listened to this book in January when I didn't have so much Christmas cheer, which I think may be why ultimately I rated it as 3 stars (bah humbug). I found Matt Haig's style grated in places - can't put my finger on why.

But it's definitely a book my kids will love, and I cannot rate Carey Mulligan's narration highly enough. The perfect voice for this book!
