Mark and Melissa Cain are thrilled to have found Jade, a babysitter who is brilliant with their young children. Having seen her own house burn to the ground, Jade needs them as much as they need her. Moving Jade into the family home can only be a good thing, can’t it? As Mark works long hours as a police officer and Melissa struggles with running a business, the family become ever more reliant on their babysitter, who is only too happy to help. And as Melissa begins to slip into depression, it’s Jade who is left picking up the pieces. But Mark soon notices things aren’t quite as they seem. Things at home feel wrong, and as Mark begins to investigate their seemingly perfect sitter, what he discovers shocks him to his core. He’s met Jade before. And now he suspects he might know what she wants.

A fast moving well crafted novel, Characters plausible and made the reader want to help them. I had a problem with the onset of a very drugged Melissa starting so quickly and dramatically . I felt t was left to become critical without too much questioning about the total mess she became. The plot was well rounded, perhaps a touch predictable at times but I enjoyed it and would recommend it to other readers.

10 hrs and 26mins of a riveting, dark story delivered superbly by the narrator. The content was very much on a need to know basis which was quite enough to make the hairs stand up on my arms. A dreadful case involving young children but the writing about it was subtle, implied - just enough. Milly became creepier as time went on and the end was no surprise but cleverly written and understated until .......I can't say it would be a spoiler.
It was a bit disturbing that I felt little emotion about the outcome. It just seemed to fit in with the whole feel of the book.

The police in Jersey County, Illinois, accepted Paula Sims' story of a masked kidnapper who snatched her baby girl, Lorelei, from her bassinet. Three years later, her second newborn daughter suffered an identical fate - and this time the police were unable to stop searching until they had discovered the whole horrifying truth. This is the full terrifying story of twisted sexuality and hate seething below the surface of a seemingly normal family and of the massive investigation and nerve-shattering trial that made the unthinkable a reality.

I am sure it deserves more stars. I can judge only what I read and I could not read anymore. Too upsetting so the author has made an impact. Don't let my feelings stop you from reading this book.
