I ’ve enjoyed this book so very much, more than I’ve enjoyed other books in a very long time in fact. I need to buy a paper version of it!

It takes you deep into the lives of the characters and into their own personal character. It provides sharp observations, providing windows into of each of them and yet, it is never overly sentimental, mawkish, or tedious.

The book is a marvellous balance of the social history around the characters, with the significant and not so significant ups and downs, and some very different
aspects of their everyday life - the things many people 'reading' it have experienced, some shocking and life changing. People's resilience and hope comes over really well - the hope and resilience every single person reading this book has needed at some time in their own life to a greater or lesser degree. It ties all the threads up well at the end, leaving no loose ends left to wonder about.

There were some characters I cared about more than others, and I did at times feel a real sense of loss, however, I can honestly say that there wasn’t one character I didn’t care about because I really did – and I miss them all! Though, in a way they are still whispers around the edges of my day. I will be 'reading' this book again many times.

Could have been a really nice read but...

This book had such promise the setting and the storyline should have made this a good read, however, the male voices prevented that. The male voices and that of the little girl Agate, who I struggled to understand, spoilt this book, I really couldn't understand Agate why she spoke in the way she did! One of the main male characters sounded like a gangster and the voice prevented me warming to this character at all! In fact, the majority of the main voices were pretty awful. I felt the end of the book was sudden and a cop out! this is not a book I will listen to again.

This story has been really well written, very engaging. I was totally captivated by the character, Marvellous. Although the end was unexpected as well as lovely, I was really quite sad to say goodbye to Marvellous.
Marvellous narration - brilliant!!

Beautifully crafted, exquisite phrases. Excellent narration. I urge you to listen to this book for the absolute eloquence in the telling of the story.
I was interested in every character and could feel the heat of that summer beating down on me, stifling me.
It is a long time since I have heard such beautiful and uniquely crafted sentences out of words that we all have access to but don't have the ability to craft in such a breath drawing way. Don't miss this book.

I only intended to listen for half an hour but had to finish it!

The narrator is excellent and i'm delighted to see the same narrator is used throughout the series. It is hard to credit that it is only one persons voice used for all the characters as each is so believable and recognisable. I have read the books which I had really enjoyed and had definite characters formed in my mind because of this I was worried that an audio version might disappoint - this audio book did not disappoint... Diana Bishop saw to that!

The only thing that spoils the experience for me is at the end when you get the big movie type voice announcing what you have been listening to - drives me mad and I hate it, such strange pronunciations as well!

The story wraps me in the very fabric of Venice.

This narrator is a superb Brunneti.
