An elderly lady loses her money on an investment; a conjuror is pursued by thugs; and a clairvoyant mentions the name of the richest man in Europe and his mysterious company. Seemingly unconnected events set Sally Lockhart on the trail of an evil far more awful than she could ever imagine. This thriller, by the author of The Ruby in the Smoke, evokes its 19th century setting and at the same time remains remarkably contemporary in the originality of its plot and larger-than-life characters.

I am new to Philip Pullman. I started with His Dark Materials, narrated by himself and am now learning about Sally Lockheart, narrated by the brilliant Anton Lesser. I love Anton Lesser's narrations - he could read the IKEA catalogue and make it a best seller.

An excellent book all round.

New alliances are made and old ones are tested to their limits as Lusam's single-mindedness to rescue his mother causes him to take risks that he would never normally consider.

I am enjoying listening to this series. The narration is good with Alex Wyndham reading the book on your behalf as opposed to trying to monopolise the storyline, as some narrators do. My only problem with this series is that each book has no particular "ending". Minor plots are resolved but only so the characters can be positioned, like in a game of chess, for their role in the next book.

Lusam grew up in the relative safety of the Elveen mountains with his grandmother. She taught him the basics of magic and discovered, quite by accident, that he possessed a unique skill never seen before: the ability to hide his magical aura from the mage-sight of others. Dark secrets surround Lusam's origins, and the dark agents of the Empire will stop at nothing to kill Lusam.

I have enjoyed this book - the story flowed well and the narration was good. But I do like a book to have an ending. I realise the author wanted a cliff-hanger (almost literally in this case) but there are ways of having an "ending" as well as am "opening" for the sequel.

For me, what has made this trilogy so appealing, has been the author narrating it. There are an awful lot of audio books out there, narrated by a third party, which are sadly lacking. An author knows when he/she had added amusement or sarcasm or even fear to the written word which are not obvious to a third party reader. I am enjoying listening to Philip Pullman's books.

Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the first part of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, available as a complete and unabridged audiobook. Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power - the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring - the ring that rules them all - which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

My name is Peter Grant, and until January, I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble....

Behind the seemingly innocuous façade of St Mary's, a different kind of historical research is taking place. They don't do 'time-travel' - they 'investigate major historical events in contemporary time'. Maintaining the appearance of harmless eccentrics is not always within their power - especially given their propensity for causing loud explosions when things get too quiet. Meet the disaster-magnets of St Mary's Institute of Historical Research as they ricochet around History.
