Alan Cumming grew up in the grip of a man who held his family hostage, someone who meted out violence with a frightening ease, who waged a silent war with himself that sometimes spilled over onto everyone around him. That man was Alan's father, Alex Cumming. Alex was the dark, enigmatic heart of Cumming family life. But he was not the only mystery. Alan's maternal grandfather, Tommy Darling, had disappeared to the Far East after the Second World War.

I loved this book. Its honesty and thoughtfulness. I think more than giving insight into Alan himself, it gives insight into how physical and emotional abuse can have ramifications for life for those who have suffered it.

Rosie Strange doesn't believe in ghosts or witches or magic. It's no surprise therefore that when she inherits the ramshackle Essex Witch Museum, her first thought is to take the money and run. Still, the museum exerts a curious pull over Rosie. There's the eccentric academic who bustles in to demand she help in a hunt for the bones of the notorious Ursula Cadence, a witch long since put to death. And there's curator Sam Stone, a man about whom Rosie can't decide if he's tiresomely annoying or extremely captivating.

I had bought this looking for a light listen but even a light listen should be well written. The story had potential. I liked the idea of but it was poorly executed and as a result, became a little predictable. The character development was terrible. I was shocked to find out that the author is a woman. I lost count of the number of times the main female character "thrust out her chest " (or fluttered her lashes etc) or experienced wild mood swings. So badly written was she, that I had assumed that the author was a man who'd lived in a ceminary since birth, never having need to speak to an actual woman.
I really would not recommend this to anyone.

People aren't sure what to make of Susan Green - family and colleagues find her prickly and hard to understand, but Susan makes perfect sense to herself, and that's all she needs. At 45, she thinks her life is perfect, as long as she avoids her feckless brother, Edward - a safe distance away in Birmingham. Yet suddenly faced with the loss of her mother and, implausibly, with the possibility of becoming a mother herself, Susan's greatest fear is being realised: she is losing control.

I found it easy to listen to and a good way to revise basic phrases.
