Both George Orwell and Winston Churchill came close to death in the mid-1930s - Orwell shot in the neck in the Spanish Civil War and Churchill struck by a car in New York City. If they'd died then, history would scarcely remember them. At the time Churchill was a politician on the outs, his loyalty to his class and party suspect. Orwell was a mildly successful novelist, to put it generously. No one would have predicted that by the end of the 20th century, they would be considered two of the most important people in British history....

Pale Horse is the remarkable never-before-told true story of an army aviation task force during combat in the Afghan War, told by the commanding officer who was there. Set in the very valleys where the attacks of 9/11 were conceived and where 10 Medals of Honor have been earned since that fateful day the war began, the narrative races from ferocious firefights and bravery in battle to the quiet moments where the courageous men and women of Task Force Pale Horse catch their breath before they take to the skies again.

The book starts a little bit slow, but the build up is needed, and it pays off in the end.

Blackmon is generous with his praise of the men and women under his command, and does a fantastic job telling the story through their eyes as well as his own.

A fantastic book that I would recommend to anyone with an interest in Military History or the modern military, particularly aviation.

Superbly written and performed. Best Performed audiobook I have listened to so far.

Not particularly preachy, but clear about the conflicts of interests that plague Westminster. And the attitude of MPs towards their outside interests and expenses.

No parties go unscrutinised. A worthy listen for anyone with any interest in politics of any persuasion.
