Would you try another book written by Michelle Frances or narrated by Antonia Beamish?

I would happily listen to the narrator (provided she has overcome the stuffy nose she seemed to suffer from at the end of the narration) but I'll be less eager to consider Michelle Frances

Has The Girlfriend put you off other books in this genre?

I thought it would be a different kind of book, based on the rave reviews it has had in the bestseller list. However, in my opinion it is more of a chick lit book with a - predictable - crime plot added for drama. This doesn't mean that it's not a good book - provided that it's a predictable, clichéd story you fancy. I couldn't listen to the end - it was so boring and cringy, whilst the stuffy nosed narrator didn't help the plot either.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Good in the beginning, stuffy-nosed in the end, but I had to skip through the story as I found the plot so boring and predictable.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Girlfriend?

I wouldn't have published it in the first place - but would have recommended the author to find a chick-lit publishing house instead.

Any additional comments?

Nothing wrong with chick lit - but just not a book for me. I should have known better but was seduced by all the starry ratings.

Would you try another book written by JP Delaney or narrated by the narrators?

I'll happily listen to the narrators again - but the story is dire.

What could JP Delaney have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Dropped the clichés. I caught myself speaking out the following sentence before it was read so often; the writing was so predicative.

Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?

Yes.

What character would you cut from The Girl Before?

Am I allowed to say all of them?

Any additional comments?

Something doesn't become erotic by being described in detail. The best erotica is the one that leaves something to the listener's own imagination - our largest erogenous zone is after all our brain. To me the sexual elements in this book seemed superfluous and gratuitous, while they didn't add at all to the character descriptions. Had to give up listening after struggling to reach the halfway mark - almost on par with 50 Shades of Gray.

What would have made Gray Mountain better?

I love John Grisham's novels. I have read them all so the instant I knew his latest one was out on Audible, I bought it. However, this was not exactly the usual Grisham literary gold!

The story is predictable, trite and - I never thought I would write this about a Grisham novel - boring! The protagonist is female and sometimes the narrative feels more like a bad chick-lit novel, particularly when the dialog is between two women. No, dear John G., women do not talk about their sexual adventures minutes after meeting each other. The romantic encounters told through his protagonist are toe-curling and hackneyed and I couldn't help thinking that all it would have taken him to make the female lead credible (and less annoying!) would just have been to give her the voice that as he normally gives his male leads. Instead this woman is whinging, indecisive and not very likeable.

What didn’t you like about Catherine Taber’s performance?

The narration was wooden; monotone, abrupt and with so little tonal variation that it almost lulled me to sleep on several occasions.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I can highly recommend this book if you are suffering from insomnia, have a soft spot for Barbara Cartland morphed with Marian Keys and only need a light sprinkle of excitement.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Had the story been less predictable and not packed with one awful cliché after the other.

What was most disappointing about Peter James’s story?

I really don't get the hype about this book: to me it just seemed to be badly written crime novel. The characters were two-dimensional, the outcome predictable, the scenarios unlikely and it ended up really grinding on me.

What didn’t you like about Daniel Weyman’s performance?

I found the narration over-acted.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Hmmm...the cover looks nice....

Such a beautiful book

Where does Elizabeth Is Missing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In the absolute top.

What did you like best about this story?

The story line is both moving and gripping, the language flows easily and the desperation of the old woman looking for her missing friend is touching.

Have you listened to any of Anna Bentinck’s other performances? How does this one compare?

The reading is sublime - both the voices of the young and the old protagonist is perfectly narrated.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The story made me laugh out lough several times...and well up too.
