In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

This is one of the best books I have read in many years. Could not recommend highly enough. Serious, funny, intelligent and original.

If you enjoyed the previous book you might like this but I found it depressing. All the characters are miserable and the writing style is repetitive.

Introducing Audible's Thriller of the Year: Silent Child by Sarah A. Denzil, performed by Joanne Froggatt. In the summer of 2006, Emma Price watched helplessly as her six-year-old son's red coat was fished out of the River Ouse. It was the tragic story of the year - a little boy, Aiden, wandered away from school during a terrible flood, fell into the river, and drowned. His body was never recovered. Ten years later Emma has finally rediscovered the joy in life...until Aiden returns.

I started listening to this and after a couple of chapters asked audible for a refund as I found the writing so poor. Then I found myself stuck on a long journey with nothing to do so gave it another go. The plot is gripping and I imagine it would make a fantastic tv drama. The writing, however, is like the work of a competent GCSE student. The similes and metaphors are repetitive and laboured and the vocabulary used is incredibly limited.
