Yelena Baraz is Kennedy Foundation Professor of Latin Language and Literature and Chair of Classics at Princeton University. She was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 18. She received her PhD in Classics from the University of California at Berkeley. She writes about Latin literature and Roman cultural history, as well as history of emotions. Her books include a study Cicero's philosophical works as a cultural response to Caesar's autocratic rule (A Written Republic, 2012) and a Very Short Introduction to Cicero (2025), an investigation of the meaning of pride as a social emotion in Rome (Reading Roman Pride, 2020), and a literary study of the work of an imperial pastoral poet (Calpurnius Siculus and the Transformation of Pastoral, 2025). She has translated Calpurnius Siculus' poetry, a selection of Roman letters for How to Write a Letter: An Ancient Guide to a Lost Art (2027), and, with Jhumpa Lahiri, Ovid's Metamorphoses (2027).
