Wolfgang Daspelgruber (*1975) studied sociology and holds an engineering degree in chemical technology. He has worked in the chemical industry for many years. In his books, he combines scientific thinking with sociological analysis, exploring how modern societies shape human beings and their behavior.

He lives in Upper Austria and focuses particularly on the conditions of modern civilization and their effects on the individual. At the heart of his work is the concept of “HomoZoo”: the idea that human beings have created a highly complex artificial environment and increasingly perceive the social constraints it imposes as natural and inevitable. The cage, in this sense, is not made of bars—it consists of norms, expectations, dependencies, and narratives that have become so deeply internalized that they are barely perceived as limitations at all.

Daspelgruber’s approach is not intended as a political manifesto, but as a contribution to enlightenment and self-reflection. His aim is to make visible how social structures, power relations, and collective narratives influence the way we think and act. Rather than telling readers what to think, he encourages them to ask why they think the way they do—and to consider where genuine individual self-determination is still possible.
